Pennies from Heaven

It was at one of the many grief support meetings I attended where I learned the story of Pennies from Heaven.  Certainly a bereaved individual can appreciate the notion that our loved ones still think of us…far beyond the here and now.  But even if you are not bereaved, I hope this story can help enlighten you about a wish that every person who misses their loved one thinks of at one point or another.  Do they think of us?

At this meeting, I was handed a penny that had been engraved with the story, which read:

“Today I found a penny,
Just laying on the ground.
But it's not just a penny,
This little coin I've found.
Found pennies come from heaven.
That's what my Grandpa told me.
He said Angels toss them down.
Oh, how I loved that story.
He said when an Angel misses you,
They toss a penny down,
Sometimes just to cheer you up, To make a smile out of your frown.
So don't pass by that penny
When you're feeling blue;
It may be a Penny from Heaven
That an Angel's tossed to you.”  –Author unknown.

The idea that my son could send me a penny to let me know he's thinking of me, strangely makes me feel comforted and I can't help but smile every time I see one.  I know it may be silly but when a person is in mourning, we cling to whatever brings our loved ones alive…even though it may seem foolish.  I am certain that people wonder why I would bother to bend down and pick up a penny…they may not understand but I know why and that's all that matters.  And for that brief moment in time, I am happy.

Just as the lyrics A penny for your thoughts, a nickel for a kiss, a dime, if you tell me that you love me…can help make someone feel good, so does the story of Pennies from Heaven!

I am so proud of you for having the strength to keep going forward, and for constantly looking for ways to help others in similar situations.

      Thanks Maria,

My strength comes from those around me that help shape who I am. I am proud of you as well and thank you for all you have done for us. One of the elements that will be part of the new Survivors4G foundation was inspired by the beautiful gesture you did for us while in our early states of grief. I will share more as we draw near that step, just know that you have all contributed to our healing in one way or another.

      Love,

    Sandra,

I was told once that when we are born, we are diamonds in the rough. Every life experience we endure is like a cut into our rough diamond. Over time, as we endure the hardships, sorrows, setbacks and heartbreaks of life, more cuts are made into our diamond such that our lives over time can radiate more and more light – beautiful light that others may see and enjoy. If we allow the light of Christ to show through our broken and cut up lives, we will radiate such beautiful light to those that need to see it most. That is what you are doing through your book, your blog and your website. I have also seen you do it through being a wonderful, caring mother for your youngest son whom my son is privileged to call a fellow Boy Scout and friend. Thank you for your ministry and witness. God bless you. Jeff

      Thanks Jeff,

Your comments are beautiful and very inspirational!!! I am still amazed at the wonderful people that God has placed in our path and can honestly say we are blessed to have met you and your family. I believe both our boys have great futures ahead of them. Their greatest treasure is their love for the Lord.

      In Christ,
